Faiz has a background in studying the Islamic sacred sciences, mental health and psychological approaches from Islamic principles. He has been involved in various community projects, Muslim Mental Health research, lead focus groups and courses/workshops. Faiz has been engaged in various roles from youth work, family support work and therapy as well as teaching counselling in various institutes.
He works with major health organisations such as: Mind, The Childrens Society, NSPCC,
Approachable Parenting, Inspirited Minds, University of Warwick and others. Faiz has experience in working therapeutically with individuals, couples & families. Addressing various issues including cross cultural, intergenerational & trauma-informed work, all underpinned from a faith and culturally sensitive perspective.
Co-founder, Counsellor, Lead Trainer
Ustadh Waqas specialises in Islamic approaches to therapy & psychology. He currently works as a supervisor for the NSPCC, alongside teaching & providing faith-centered counselling for individuals, couples and families.
He spent his formative years studying the religious sciences and classical Arabic with Shaykh Sjaad Hussain, which culminated in an Ijaza (general teaching license). He also is a vocationally qualified counsellor which has allowed him to combine modern perspectives on Mental Health and wellbeing, with core Muslim beliefs and values.
Ustadh Waqas has been involved in youth work, community projects and charity enterprises for nearly 2 decades, working with Path to Salvation, New Roots, Open Circle and is one of the founding members of the Sacred Texts Syllabus. In 2012-13, he contributed to a pivotal research project, which helped revise the Salah Timing Calendars in the UK, under the supervision of Shaykh Dr Asim Yusuf.
Counsellor, Outreach Manager
Nadia Shaheen is a healthcare professional with 15+ years of clinical experience and over 20 years serving her community in pharmacy. As an Independent Prescriber, she delivers safe, holistic, and patient-centred care while empowering individuals to improve their wellbeing.
Trained as an Islamic counsellor, Nadia specialises in youth and addiction support, offering culturally sensitive, faith-informed guidance that nurtures resilience and growth. She is also a qualified Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Supervisor, fostering leadership and confidence in young people through outdoor education.
Active and community-minded, Nadia enjoys walking, netball, and charity work — reflecting her lifelong commitment to service, compassion, and purpose.
Media Manager
Emdad oversees media, communications, and digital outreach at SLM Wellbeing. He is responsible for sharing the organisation’s vision and services with the community through creative and accessible content.
With a background in project management, design and social media strategy, Syed ensures that SLM Wellbeing’s counselling and faith-based support reach those who need it most. He is passionate about using media to amplify positive change and to connect people with spaces of healing and growth.
Media & Communications Assistant
Inaaya is currently studying Social Care at Birmingham City University and has a strong passion for community work and making a difference. She has developed media skills from a young age, supporting several organisations with their social media presence and engagement.
In her role at SLM, Inaaya uses these skills to raise awareness of community initiatives, helping to expand their reach and positive impact.
Head of Fundraising
As Head of Fundraising at SLM Wellbeing, Munir works on building partnerships and securing the resources needed for our programmes to grow and make a lasting impact. With a background in economics, he brings strategic insight and a thoughtful approach to developing sustainable fundraising opportunities.
Over the past decade, Munir has volunteered with organisations such as New Roots, Open Circle, and the Prophet of Mercy, gaining wide experience in community engagement, youth work, and faith-based initiatives. His dedication reflects a strong commitment to empowering communities and supporting meaningful change.
